“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). This was David’s prayer. Many people are still praying this. This is an Old Covenant verse. In the New Covenant, we have a new heart and the Holy Spirit dwells in us. Our spirits are renewed. Now if we say that “right spirit” is right thinking then we all want to be more like Jesus. Paul uses the term “in the spirit of your mind” which has the connotation of attitude and cooperation with the Holy Spirit. We also want our spirits open to guidance by the Holy Spirit. He will never force us to do or say something. “Right” means to be firmly established. It means to be ready and prepared. It doesn’t mean the opposite of wrong. Other translations use the word “steadfast.” Our lives are steadfast on God’s Word and listening to the Spirit direct our days.
