“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things” (Philippians 4:8 NKJV). When we say “virtue” it sounds like an old-fashioned word, which we hear little of today. It denotes ‘intrinsic eminence, moral goodness.” The question arises, can man have any intrinsic goodness apart from God? Certainly, man can achieve a certain degree of fame and good works, and can bring people to admire them, but is that virtue? The dictionary calls virtue, “behavior showing high moral standards.” My personal opinion is that virtue begins with God’s goodness dwelling within. From that flows behavior and good deeds. Virtue in my opinion, is a reflection of Jesus in a person’s life. Jesus was truly the man of great virtue. “And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all” (Luke 6:19).
