Whatever Is Lovely

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things” (Philippians 4:8 NKJV). This is the only time the Bible uses lovely so there is not a lot of explanation available for its meaning. It’s made up of two words, “toward” and “to love (phileō)”. We might say, “Isn’t that a lovely flower.” Lovely has an elegance and delicacy about it. It’s pleasing and agreeable. Think on the beautiful, exquisite, and charming. Again, think about Jesus. He matches the description. In the Song of Solomon, the writer describes the “beloved” whom we believe is a picture of Jesus as “he is altogether lovely.”
