The Goodness

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” (Romans 2:4). What leads a person to repentance? The “goodness of God.” Jesus chose Paul to bring the Gospel of grace to the world. Jesus hinted at it a great deal in His teaching, but it was a mystery only He could reveal after He went to the cross. Under the old teaching, the law was what was supposed to straighten people out. Under the New Covenant, it’s grace and goodness. Now it is knowing the kindness and easy approach there is to God. He isn’t angry. Even though God used sermons such as Jonathan Edwards “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” God isn’t angry. He is good. He is smiling. Even though many still think you have to give law, fire, and brimstone, Paul says it is knowing that God is good and loves you more than you will ever know.
