“Be hospitable to one another without complaint” (1 Peter 4:9 NASB). This is one of the many “be” verses. From this, we can conclude that this is what we should be. There is a fine line here concerning motive. One person will read this verse and make it a commandment. Thou shalt be hospitable. This person will not always be hospitable and will feel he or she has sinned and feel ashamed. This is just another law.
Another person will see this verse and will conclude that our love for one another will include being hospitable. It’s not burdensome. There will be no complaint or grudging attitude because it come from a heart of love. One is grace and the other is law. Grace by its very nature is gracious—hospitable. Law will force and begrudge. How do you read this verse? Is it your heart to be hospitable? Are you doing it because the Word says you have to do it and after all, you have to obey the Word?
