“Your word I have hidden in my heart …” (Psalm 119:11 NKJV). “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23 NIV2011). These two verses fit together because guarding your heart requires that you hide the Word in your heart. The KJV says the “issues” of life come from the heart. The NIV pushes it to mean everything you do begins in the heart.
That’s why it is so important to guard your heart. To guard is to protect, and to maintain, even preserve your heart. Both the spirit and the soul feed the heart. External things can reach the heart. Music for example, can slip into the heart. Good music helps us refine our beliefs. Actually, bad music can change them. That’s why we must guard our hearts. Why does the faith of so many young people get confused when they reach college? They allow confusion into their hearts. Guard your heart.
