I’m sure you’ve read Psalm 23 many times, and you might have memorized it. So often we can memorize and repeat words without understanding the full meaning. A friend on social media had a post about verse 5 of Psalm 23 (ESV), and it really caught my attention. “You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
The Psalmist was anointing the sheep’s head with oil. Why? Sheep, I learned, are subject to having small flies torment them by laying eggs in their nostrils as well as their ears and eyes being susceptible to irritating insects. The Solution is for the shepherd to anoint their whole head with oil. The oil forms a barrier of protection against what tries to destroy the sheep. It brings peace to the sheep.
1 Joh 2:27 gives you a promise that as a believer “the anointing [fresh oil] you received from him [Jesus] remains in you.” You have His oil of protection, healing—anything you need—so receive it by faith and walk in His peace and joy today.
