“And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him” (Luke 22:43). Even Jesus need strength in His hour of greatest need. The Father sent an angel to strengthen Him. Just how we don’t know, but I am thinking the angel encouraged him by bringing Him empowering words from the Father. The Word itself is empowering. Jesus upholds “all things by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3). When Jesus ministered, people were astonished “for His word was with power” (Luke 4:32). Jesus is the Word (John 1:1). The power of Jesus is within us. His word is at work in us.
The Word dwells within us and empowers us to receive the promises. Just as Jesus needed strength to go to the cross, so we might have strength to face each day in overcoming power. Jesus not only requires belief—faith from us, He gives us the faith we need. He strengthens our inner man to believe His word.
