Freedom From Fear

The world is full of fear. Every day you either hear or read things trying to stir up fear in your heart and mind. Some folks including believers center on the fearful things in the world to the exclusion of being set free from fear. They’re quick to believe the worst things are coming because they think it is God’s way of punishment. They don’t think they’re strong enough to counter the fear. They believe the fear is greater than God.

TRUTH: Nothing is greater than God, and certainly not fear. When you know God’s love for you, you also know He won’t ever make you fearful. Understand there is no capacity for fear in God. The gods of this world and other religions can stir up an angry picture of a god who hates you and will punish you if you don’t fulfill certain things. That is not an accurate picture of God. He is good, always and forever.

Let’s be reminded of this truth in Romans 5:17 NASB, “…those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.” When we’re afraid or walk in fear, we are not receiving or allowing the abundance of God’s grace to manifest in our life. When we know what is ours through Jesus, we gain power and have the necessary tools to reign in life through His grace and love. That enables us to conquer fear and not let it direct our life.

Look again at the example of magnets. The unseen area around a magnet is called a magnetic field. When you’ve been reborn in God’s love and life, God’s blessings like magnetic objects, are attracted to you as a child of God. You’re meant to receive everything God has. Knowing God’s love for you will continue to expand within your heart and repel further fear because fear is kept outside the magnetic field. How is this possible? Because there is no fear in love as 1 John 4:18, NASB states, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.”

The Word is always our foundation, our truth. God’s perfect love working in us casts out fear. One particular scripture set me free from fear is 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV). “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” We understand that fear is NOT from God. Jesus came and set all of us free of fear, no matter what the fear. We can choose to keep fear in our thinking and actions, or we can resist and overcome it in the power of God. We have a choice. Personally, I’ll choose freedom from fear, and so can you. In fact I did.

When I faced certain medical tests that gave a possibility of something wrong in several areas of my body, I had a choice. I could panic and stay in fear, which I initially did; or I could believe God’s Word and stay in faith. I quickly chose to believe Jesus is my healer and not accept the bad report. You see, fear only leads to more fear, stress and unrest, all which isn’t of God.

APPLICATION: I immediately got into the Word, and the Holy Spirit led me to 2 Timothy 1:7. When I read this scripture, it empowered me in faith and gave me strength. I continued meditating on the truth of this verse every day. I made it personal. I declared ‘I do not have a spirit of fear but of power, of love, and I have a sound mind.’ I continued declaring the Word even when I went for other doctor appointments. I was not going to be held captive to fear. I was an overcomer, and I was making my stand in my authority as a child of God. I strengthened my faith with God’s Word, and nothing was going to change my stand. The result? What was deemed ‘bad’ turned out to be nothing in my physical body.

Believers are meant to overcome. You’re meant to overcome, not be overcome with fear. God provided everything to accomplish and walk in this truth through Jesus. Paul Ellis says an overcomer is a person who believes in Jesus and who sees themselves as God sees them, dearly loved and empowered with Christ-brought authority. We fail in defeating fear or worry when we don’t operate in our authority as believers. We fail when we let fear be bigger than God. Let’s not fail any longer. Fear is not bigger than our God!

As a result of my experience, I used my God-given authority and defeated the spirit of fear with the Word of God. Even today, whenever the enemy tries to get me into fear with any physical issues or anything else, I’m quick to stop him in his tracks with what the Word of God says. Recognize, what you do always follows who you are. You can do the same thing I did when fear attacks you. It doesn’t matter if it is fear of an illness or disease, if it’s for a wayward child, a business deal, or even what lies ahead for you this year and beyond. God’s Word in your heart is a powerful tool in your mouth.

Overcoming fear is important, and in our next study we’ll help you understand what is available and how to appropriate 2 Timothy 1:7.

I encourage you to continue studying the scriptures in this study as you stand against any fear coming against you. YOU are more than a conqueror and you have the tools to defeat fear and rise above it.

Romans 5:17 NASB – “…those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.”

Make It Personal: Because I have received Jesus, and because I His righteousness, I am righteous in God’s eyes, and in His abundance of grace I AM reigning in life, overcoming fear through Jesus.

1 John 4:18 NASB – “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.”

Make It Personal: God’s perfect love casts out fear because He is love and there is no fear in His love. Therefore, I walk in love and free from fear.

2 Timothy 1:7 KJV – “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Make It Personal: God had NOT given me the spirit of fear, or fear of any kind. It doesn’t reside in God and can’t reside in me as His child. He HAS given me power-His power, love-the fulness of His love where no fear can reside, and a sound mind, a good, untroubled mind where I can receive His strength and Word and walk disciplined in my authority as His child.

ASK YOURSELF:

What is one area of fear you’re struggling with in overcoming?

How is God’s Word helping you change how you react when fear attacks?

How are you growing in God’s love?

What is one way you’ve overcome fear this week?

How is the abundance of God’s grace working in your life?
