The Signs Of Renewed Thinking

We’ve touched on why it’s important to change our thinking and renew our minds as believers because if we don’t make some changes, we’ll be like we were before—the old us. I like what Paul tells us in Colossians. In chapter 3 of Colossians Paul brings out some important points for us in how to go about renewing your mind. He lays the groundwork in verse 10 by stating we’re to “put on the new self”. That’s the new you as a child of God, follower of Jesus, indwelt by Him. This new self is in the process daily of being renewed in knowledge of God and in His image (reflection of Him to the world). Christ in you. It’s necessary to first get a picture of God in you, and renew your image to how God sees you. (Very important!)

Paul then goes on in verse 12 addressing you and I as elect, holy and beloved (loved much). He doesn’t say you’re an old sinner. He says you are a new person, chosen, the redeemed of the Lord, highly favored, and dearly cherished and totally loved. As this person, Paul encourages us (NIV) “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Sounds like it involves a renewing, doesn’t it?

When you get ready for a special occasion, most likely you put on your best outfit. You want to look good and feel good. You put on those things that both make you feel and look good. The spiritual correlation is putting on the fruit of your new life—love, compassion, kindness, etc. It isn’t something you have to work at to put on. It is to flow from a renewed heart full of God’s love. You walk in newness of life.

So, you’re wondering if you are showing signs of renewed thinking? You walk in the new you. You walk in the compassion and kindness of Jesus. You walk in His gentleness and patience. You walk in His love. I read something profound the other day that zeroes in on how our renewed thinking and being should be seen in the world. See if you catch the picture. This is from Jesus For Dummies 101. “Never think you don’t have an impact. Your fingerprints can’t be wiped away from the little marks of kindness that you’ve left behind.”

Your fingerprints of kindness, of love and compassion can change lives. Your fingerprints of patience can enable someone to taste and see the Lord is good. Just think of all the places your fingerprints are seen each day. Others should be able to see His fingerprints in ours.

And, it all begins as we continue to renew our thinking and our minds. The more we do, the more we’ll see His fingerprints over everything we do, from the smile to the grocery clerk, to the appreciation given to the one opening the door for you. There are countless ways to allow God’s love and life to overflow in ours through renewing our minds in Him.

It’s a matter of being more conscious of His love and goodness, and seeing Him move in your life. It’s sharing how good He is to you with someone else who can’t yet see it. It’s being His hands and feet in this world, sharing His love.

So believer, continue to clothe yourself in the image of Jesus. Learn how He interacted with people and what He said. Copy Him. You’ll love the renewal process.
