Do you recall the movie, The Help? The maid, Aibileen, continually told her employer’s daughter, Mae Mobley, she was kind, smart, and important, and had her repeat it each day. She knew if the little girl believed those attributes were hers, she’d be like that as she grew up.
Words are like arrows. They carry weight, direction, and are intent on reaching a target. We speak many words during a 24-hour period. Some of our words won’t carry much weight or intention, yet others can be more intense. Words are carriers, carrying meaning to the hearer.
We need to fill our hearts/minds and mouth with God’s words and who He says we are. We need to align our language, our words, with His, especially when we talk to ourselves. (What faith-building words to you tell yourself in the mirror?)
Luke 6:45 ESV says it pretty clearly. “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
Jesus speaks the language of abundance—of ALL He is—so let’s not speak our “in-this-world” language of lack in any area of our life. Let’s not speak our unrighteousness. You are all that God is because He lives in you.
Now is the time to change your self-image and self-talk. Now is the time to watch your words and make sure they line up with who you are in Christ Jesus. Do as Abraham did and say what God said. Romans 4:17 ESV – “as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.” God told him he’d have a son, an heir. In the natural he was too old. But he believed God, changed his thinking (renewed his mind), and changed his words.
Your words have power. God’s words in your mouth are powerful. Speak His words and you’ll be amazed and excited to see the changes and blessings to come.
