(21) But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:
(22) The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies
never come to an end
(23) they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:21-23 ESV
Is mercy operating in our world today? There are times when I read or hear news headlines and I wonder. Strictly from the world’s perspective I don’t see much mercy in operation. Mercy is defined as compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm. Others have said at its core, mercy is forgiveness.
Overall, the world doesn’t have compassion on those who don’t follow their way, and it’s exhibited in all countries, all nationalities and races. It’s sad that people aren’t compassionate enough to not only show mercy but give mercy to others. What about believers who have been transformed by God’s mercy? Are we aware of God’s endless mercies for us?
God’s love doesn’t stop and neither do His mercies. Why? Because as verse 22 states, “they [mercies] are new every morning”. What a wonderful promise for us. Even the prophet Nehemiah stated “You are a gracious and merciful God” (Neh. 9:31). King David also stated the mercy of God in Psalm 145;9 ESV, “For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them.”
Titus states God saved us, not because of any righteous things we do, but because of His mercy (Titus 3:5). God’s gracious mercy is available 24/7. That is why we can follow what Hebrews 4:16 says and come to His throne of grace with confidence, because we’ll find mercy and grace to help in our time of need.
Let’s be willing to demonstrate God’s unending mercy to those around us as we continue to receive His mercy each day.
