Wandering Thoughts

I heard this phrase recently, and it really got me to thinking: Thoughts wandering out of formation.

I could visualize birds, each one, aimlessly flying without a leader, wandering without a destination. Then I realized my thoughts are subject to wandering out of formation many times when my mind jumps from one thought to another one even while I’m doing other things, like fixing dinner. Perhaps you can identify.

The more I meditated on this, the more I could see the problem we all face each day. We spend time in the Word of God and are encouraged, yet once obstacles present themselves what happens? The Word is minimized and before we realize it, our thoughts are going elsewhere. Thoughts we had from the Word are wandering out of formation. We lost the connection to joy and peace, and we allowed other things to move us away from the promises and strength of the Word.

So, how do we rectify this problem that plagues all of us? Things will happen in life. Some things you can manage better than others, but when they do occur, you’ve got to go back to the Word. Here’s where you can use the sword of God’s Word to cut through the frustration and even worry on what you are facing. Here is where you tell yourself what the Word says, and that you are more than a conqueror no matter what. In fact, Philippians 4:7 states “the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.

Keep your heart and mind focused on the Word not on things that will sidetrack you. Take your authority as God’s child and allow His Word to continue strengthening and encouraging you. You’ll have less wandering thoughts and more thoughts centered on the promises that are yours.
