Forgetting The Past

So many times we desperately want and need a do-over, but we’re stuck in the past. It may even seem impossible to move on. If we don’t move forward, we’ll be chained to what was, what could have been, what won’t be. It is spiral thinking that can keep us in the past unable to enjoy what is yet ahead.

I grew up in a time when things were not as busy, and people were nice to each other and even helped one another. They were polite, thoughtful, considerate, and just plain all around nice. Yes, it may have been a simpler time, but we knew what was right and what was wrong, and even with mistakes, we continued on knowing everything would eventually be better.

Paul stated it this way in Philippians 3:13-14 NASB, “forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” From Paul’s testimony, he had a lot he wanted to forget prior to his conversion. But one thing was certain, he would push forward to what lie ahead—God’s blessings.

Here is where our focus must be: pushing forward in the Lord, looking forward to what is ahead. He has promised to make all things new. Every day is new. Every sunrise is new. Every day is a new day to move forward. Every opportunity is there for you to walk stronger in everything Jesus purchased for you.

You can’t forget the past if you’re still thinking about it all the time. The past is past, and we must move forward. Let’s push on, forward in the blessings God has provided for us through Jesus. Let’s grow our faith and trust in God’s Word, and see our lives change.

Let’s forget the past and see a future of God’s blessings around every corner, His influence in every decision we make, and His protection surrounding us no matter where we are.
