David knew God’s steadfast love. He knew his parent’s love, and he learned and experienced God’s love for him. He understood God’s blessings for those who reverenced Him, who followed His truth. Even though he lived and operated under the Law, David had a picture truth of God’s amazing love and eternal plan beyond Old Testament days.
All those days he spent shepherding his father’s sheep taught him God’s faithfulness. He was surrounded by God’s goodness, and just as he loved and cared for the sheep, so he understood more of God’s love for mankind.
In Psalm 147:11, ESV, David shares this truth: “but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love”. He knew those who participated in God’s goodness would have and live in God’s steadfast hope. Steadfast hope is hope that does not disappoint. It’s constant—continual—and never stops.
David understood through experience how God’s love continued throughout his entire life, and yes, even in the bad times or times when he didn’t quite measure up. It was through these experiences and the truth he knew of God, that gave him hope. It was this hope that continued to enforce God’s love for him.
To those who know the Lord, to those who lift Him up in their lives, who magnify His goodness, who recognize all that Jesus has done, are those the Lord takes pleasure in and blesses. We are those people.
We take pleasure in God’s goodness, in His faithfulness, in all that Jesus has done for us, and in His steadfast love that never stops, never runs out, and is continually available to us. His steadfast love is our hope.
