What Do You Believe About God?

To those of us who believe and trust God, it’s hard to understand how other people don’t. A friend of mine told me her grandson who is very smart, even though somewhat autistic, doesn’t believe in God because he can’t fit it into his way of thinking. How many other people, and yes, even people in church, perhaps have a difficult time believing who God is, and that He loves them?

I believe the church has done disservice to the world because the religiosity of many churches paints a picture of a God who demands perfection, who will bop you on the head if you don’t tithe enough, pray enough, etc. God put it this way to His people through Hosea the prophet in Hosea 6:6 NLT “I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.”

Somehow the Old Testament laws have filtered into Christian churches and certain requirements have been issued as what God wants. If you don’t do thus and so, you won’t be blessed, or you won’t be righteous.

That is NOT the correct picture of God, of Jesus or His redemptive love for mankind. You know John 3:16-17, ESV. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” These verses speak of God’s love and salvation, not condemnation.

Furthermore, God doesn’t dwell in you as a believer because you promise to obey ALL His commandments or because you submit to his will or a set of rules by a church. Nor does He dwell in you because you’ve promised Him you won’t ever sin again.

He dwells in you based on what you believe about Him.

So then, is your belief about God correct? Is he a God of love? Has He blessed you with a new life? Has He filled you with His very presence? Is He wanting to bless you abundantly?

Don’t wait to make any needed changes in your heart and mind about God. Dig into His Word and learn more of who He is and all that He has provided for you through Jesus.
