Growing in Grace

This year I’ve been getting all my doctor checkups. I have a urologist, cardiologist, ophthalmologist, dermatologist, and a primary care physician. One thing often said is “as you get older…” I’m definitely in that getting older category. It’s not depressing but just reality. Getting older is one of those things we don’t want to do, but it comes along with life’s seasons.

They say by the time you are out of your teens; you’ve done with growing. I’ve found that I might not grow taller, but I might grow wider and heavier. That’s where dieting comes in. Being overweight is one of those things the doctors bring up and says you need to diet and lose the weight. Well, I’m dieting and losing the weight. It’s harder to lose weight “as you get older…”

But I’m thankful there is one area of growing that I can work on. 2 Peter 3:18 states, “but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (NASB). I can grow each day in grace. I’ve learned a lot about grace in the last few years. It’s not just growing in the grace and knowledge. Many people read and study to learn more. That’s fine, but Peter is telling us to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus.

Jesus is the center point about which everything else revolves. Jesus is Grace. Growing in grace means understanding the finished work of Jesus and how that affects our everyday life. We are no longer under the Old Covenant but under the New Covenant. We are no longer under the law, but under grace. To mix them is a disgrace. Grace frees us to walk each day in the blessings of God’s promises and to live free from condemnation of any kind.

Yes, “as you get older…” doesn’t mean it’s over, but it’s just getting better as we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I’m getting thinner with dieting but growing fatter in grace.
