Jesus Is The Living Water

Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you,

‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10 NASB)

If you have been watching the news about the moon exploration, one of the priorities is to search for water. There may be water on the moon’s surface, either in the form of ice in permanently shadowed craters near the lunar poles or as water molecules embedded in the lunar soil.

Water is essential to life here on earth. According to Wikipedia, the total volume of water on Earth is estimated at 1.386 billion km³ (333 million cubic miles), with 97.5% being salt water and 2.5% being freshwater. You would think that is plenty for everyone on the earth and would ever be here. But water isn’t distributed evenly. Water is scarce in the desert regions. And sometimes it’s too plentiful especially in times of floods. On average, women, and girls in developing countries walk approximately 3.5 miles a day, carrying approximately 42 pounds of water. In some areas, it is common for this journey to take more than 15 hours a week.

The Samaritan woman at the well came to obtain the life sustaining water that was an important commodity in Israel at the time. The wells were deep, and many people had to come to the well to find water. Jacob dug this well centuries earlier, so it was famous and life sustaining.

But Jesus talked of living water. As important as water is for life, Jesus spoke of water more important. He explains this water in verses 13 and 14.

Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.

Well water sustains physical life, but living water sustains eternal life, or everlasting life. Jesus is the living water. Jesus is life (John 14:16). Jesus is the source of life. Through Jesus we have eternal life when we drink of the living water. Believe in Jesus and you never thirst again. Living water is life-giving water. Eternity is a long time, and it starts now. Look to Jesus for He alone can give you eternal living water.
