In The Shadow Of His Wings

I recall several hikes my husband and I took some years ago, usually in the Smoky Mountains. If you’ve ever hiked some of the trails there, you know they not only go UP, but then you’ve got to come back DOWN. Some of the hikes are more challenging than others. You may have hiked other areas that are challenging, also.

I’ve noticed when we hiked, if the weather looks threatening, we’ve had to figure out where we could go for shelter if we got caught outside in the rain. There isn’t always a cave nearby, nor would you necessarily want to enter one. Some areas will have shelters for the weary hiker, and those are usually safe. No matter what the conditions are, you need to be sure there’s shelter of some kind when you’re out in the elements.

Doesn’t that remind you of how our lives are in this world? We go through life and then it seems suddenly we encounter a storm—a challenge, and we look for the first available refuge, right?

That’s why King David talked about his place of protection in the shelter of God’s wings. He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may take refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and wall.” (Psalm 91:4 NASV)

Just as the mother hen gathers and shelters her chicks from danger under her wings, the Lord gathers us in His love and protection as we draw near to Him. He’s there to provide what we need right then. It’s up to us to take shelter and refuge with Him. How do you do that?

Take His promises to heart. Believe them. Speak the Word aloud over your life, your situation, trusting Him, His Word. The more you find comfort, peace, and shelter in Him, the stronger you’ll stand against anything what comes your way. His faithfulness is your shield.
