Creator Jesus Pt. 2

Last week we decided that according to Hebrews 1:3, Jesus, the Word upholds or sustains all things. All means all, so includes the universe. Jesus was involved in the origin of the universe, though Genesis is primarily talking about the earth. Then God said, Let there be light”; and there was light (Genesis 1:3 NASB). Notice that God “said.” When someone says something, it happens through a word. Jesus as the Word brought everything into existence through a word. He was the Word who spoke everything into existence.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.

That’s amazing. When God said, “light be,” the universe came into existence. Despite commentators who say, “the phrase, then, is metaphorical,” I think God spoke and the Word, as powerful as it is, brought into existence things which weren’t in existence at the time. Maybe there was a big bang when He spoke, maybe not, but something powerful happened.

I was reading an article in the latest AARP magazine, (Yes, I’m that old.) about Henry Louis Gates, the acclaimed Harvard professor with his hit PBS series that traces the genealogies of well-known Americans. He gave his life to Christ when he was 12 years old and the church didn’t allow anyone to go to basketball games, play cards or dance, (been there) and he didn’t for 2 years until he said, “I began to feel like a hypocrite, because I was worshipping with people who thought the world was created in seven days. And that there actually was a man and woman named Adam and Eve.”

I thought this was so ironic, of a man who has a popular TV show where he finds ancestors for people, usually celebrities. How does a man who goes back in the ancestry of people, not think if he went far enough back, it would have to have started with two people, who the Bible calls Adam and Eve. If there were two people, then God also formed the earth as Genesis says also. Next week we will delve into this a little more. Stay tuned.
