Moving Past Depression

So many people throughout the world, and probably even some we personally know, battle with depression. Many live in situations that are not conducive to learning how to overcome troubling thoughts and situations. You may have even been subject to a bout of depression at one time.

Think about this profound statement:

If you rearrange the letters in
Depression
You’ll get “I Pressed On”

This statement speaks to how we all can get passed depressing times. It’s all too easy to want to give up when everything comes against you. It’s an easy way out, not having to take the responsibility of changing, isn’t it?

When you’re depressed, you only see what your current reality is, and it’s probably negative; in fact, that’s what your emotions are telling you. You can’t see beyond what you are experiencing. But what we experience isn’t the whole truth for our lives. We see in part and we understand in part when we experience various trials. We don’t need be stuck in a continual web of negative thoughts. Negative thoughts only lead to more negativity and can eventually throw you off the cliff of depression. Don’t let it!

The Apostle Paul was subjected to trials and troubles. At times things went from bad to worse, BUT he didn’t stay in a negative mindset. He shared what he knew through his experiences in Romans 5:3, ESV—that even in sufferings, trials, and depression, he could still stand strong in the hope Jesus gives him because he knew God’s hope will not disappoint.

Paul also gives a remedy on how to combat depression and negative thoughts in Philippians 4:8-9, ESV: “whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” He makes it practical by telling you and me to practice these things. What result can you expect? Peace of heart and mind.

You just changed depression into I pressed on.
