May 25, 2026I’m sure you’re familiar with the phrase “April Showers Bring May Flowers”, but what about May showers?
I know many parts of the country are dealing with more rain than they’ve needed, while others are requesting the extra be delivered to them, especially in areas that have been extremely dry and susceptible to fires. When we’re in an area of abundant rain, it’s easy to complain; yet, let’s be mindful of those who don’t have enough rain, or are in dangerous situations. We can all face times of dissatisfaction, especially when weather is concerned. Let’s be understanding no matter where we live.
Since we’re talking about showers, I’m reminded of an old hymn that talks about times of showers of blessings. The original hymn was written by D.W. Whittle in 1883: There shall be showers of blessing: this is the promise of love; There shall be seasons refreshing, Sent from the Savior above. The refrain speaks of blessings needed even with mercy drops falling around us. Apparently 1883 was a pivotal year in global history: major infrastructural breakthroughs, devastating natural disasters, and reorganization of modern timekeeping, to name a few. The religious scene showed the dominance of Protestant churches where other churches were considered more liberal. The country was changing, people were speaking out, and yet a few centered on what they saw as needed throughout the world, no matter what side you were on: God’s Blessings were needed by everyone.
Pastors and other leaders knew human effort alone was insufficient; therefore, they peached and encouraged others for God’s divine favor for provision, protection, and spiritual peace, emphasizing God alone is the source of all good, all blessings.
Things overall haven’t changed that much over the years. People are still looking for favor, for God’s blessings. I’m reminded of what Ephesians 1:3 tells us: “Praise be to the god and Father and of our Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” And, Philippians 4:19 “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
No matter if you’re in a time of deficit or plenty, God’s blessings are available and yours, so keep your hearts receptive and open. Stay ready to walk in more of God’s showers of blessings!
