Ephesians 3:11

This was in accordance with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord,

God includes us in His eternal purpose that stretches from eternity past to eternity future. He designed this purpose to save the world from sin and to form a family that will live with Him through all ages. He fulfilled this plan through the coming, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We call this the finished work of Jesus. God planned every part of this purpose in Christ, and we now participate in it. Our lives carry meaning because God Himself wrote us into His story, and He continues to unfold that purpose through us today.

God’s eternal purpose has not changed throughout history. Scripture emphasizes that God’s plans are eternal, unchanging, and steadfast. From eternity past, He purposed to redeem humanity, create a lasting family of believers, and reveal His glory through Christ. Human history, sin, or cultural shifts do not alter His plan.

God works in time to accomplish His eternal purpose, which unfolds according to His perfect wisdom. Events like the giving of the law, the coming of Jesus, the establishment of the Church, and the work of the Holy Spirit are all parts of the same unchanging plan. Nothing surprises God or derails His purposes, He orchestrates every detail to bring everything together in Christ, just as He designed from the beginning.

This means believers participate in a plan that transcends generations, nations, and circumstances. Our lives contribute to an eternal story that God has written, and the promises He made before time began remain fully effective today and forever. Our identity is found in His eternal purpose.
